The following is an overview of each type of performance situation:

Understanding that there may be changes based on unforeseen circumstances, the following is a basic look at individual performance days:

HOME FOOTBALL GAMES

1. Students report to band room and are seated in assigned seats for attendance, announcements and stands music rehearsal. (Guard members will be dismissed after attendance and announcements to work with instructors)

2. Following warm-ups and stands music rehearsal students will be dismissed to change into uniforms.

3. After changing into uniforms the students will form the “Blue Line” to march to the stadium.

4. It is possible that as the students march past the stands they will play the school fight song.

5. Once in the stadium students will stand during the visiting school band’s pre-game performance.

6. Following pregame the students will perform the Star Spangled Banner.

7. The students will remain in the stands to perform pep music for the game during the 1st and most of the 2nd quarter.

8. Mid-way through the 2nd quarter the band will leave the stands to warm-up for the half-time show.

9. After performing half-time the students will be given 3rd quarter to relax, get food and drinks and socialize.

10. At the conclusion of 3rd quarter all students must be back in the stands to play pep music for the remainder of the game.

11. At the conclusion of the game the students will fall into the “Blue Line” again to march out of the stadium.

12. Once all uniforms and equipment have been properly stored students will be dismissed.

AWAY FOOTBALL GAMES

1. Students report to band room and are seated in assigned seats. After attendance and announcements have been made the students will be dismissed to change into their uniforms and board the busses.

2. Upon arrival at the host school students will warm-up in the designated areas.

3. The students will perform pre-game at away games. We may also be asked to perform the Star Spangled Banner.

4. The rest of the band activity at away games is identical to home games except half-time. Toward the end of 2nd quarter our students will move to the home stands at the host school to view the host band’s half time performance. If the host school has no band we may be asked to do half-time rather than pre-game.

5. Following the game the students will march in the “Blue Line” back to the busses.

6. Once home, the students will be dismissed after all uniforms and equipment have been properly stored.

COMPETITIONS

Report times for competitions are determined by one or both of the following factors:

1. How much time there is between the end of the football game and travel time to the competition.

2. How much rehearsal is needed before leaving to ensure our best performance.

It is possible that the students may have to either leave a football game early or immediately after to get to a competition on time.

FLEXIBILITY IS CRUCIAL!

1. Competition days will require the greatest flexibility from the students and parents. It is hard to lay out what this day will look like, but we will try 

2. Students report to the parking lot (possibly wearing uniform pants and shoes) for rehearsal. Parking lot rehearsals prior to competitions will focus on drill and marching.

3. Before leaving the school drum majors will check busses to make sure everyone has everything they need before leaving.

4. Once at the competition site the students will remain on the busses until instructed to unload.

5. The first students to be dismissed from busses will be percussionists, students who play larger instruments (sousaphone, baritone sax, tenor sax, baritones and marching trombone) and guard members.

6. Once all students are dismissed from the busses the guard, winds and percussion will all report to assigned areas for warm-up.

7. Students should use restroom facilities at BHS before leaving, however, at competitions that are far away, restroom facilities will be available for emergencies before our performance.

8. Following warm-ups the band will form the “Blue Line” to march to the stadium and perform.

9. Following the performance the students will march back to the busses to change and put away equipment.

10. The band will move as a group back to the stadium to watch the rest of the competition and awards.

11. Students will be able to use the restrooms and concession stands in the stadium and the chaperones will be asked to help with this.

12. Following the awards the students will move as a group back to the busses.

13. Before the band can leave the director and staff must attend a post show critique with the judges. Students and parents sometimes wonder why the band isn’t leaving when all of the kids are back. This is why 

POSSIBILITIES:

If our band is scheduled toward the end of the competition there may not be time to report to the busses to change. The students may leave the field and stay in the stadium for awards.

The band director may want the students to watch another band’s performance (or two) before going back to the busses to change.

There may be a full retreat (rare these days) where the bands all march onto the field in uniform for the awards ceremony.

FLEXIBILITY IS THE KEY TO HAVING A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE AT A BAND COMPETION.
